Serotiny: Streamlining protein design
Bioengineers often spend significant time and effort manually designing multi-domain proteins, such as chimeric antigen receptors. Serotiny develops cloud based software for streamlining complex protein design, optimization, and synthesis. Their “Pinecone” tool provides a digital pipeline for high-throughput protein engineering, integrating functions to search for protein domains, assemble fusion protein constructs, optimizing combinatorial library design, and suggest synthesis strategies.
While some DNA synthesis companies offer consulting services for some of these design steps, none are as integrated or efficient as the Serotiny platform. Additionally, existing protein design tools are often geared towards large biopharma companies and focus on 3D modeling, not construct based synthesis. Serotiny’s tool is also more accessible to scientists interested in learning more about protein design with its user-friendly interface and integrated design, so I can see it being used by a larger segment of the academic market alongside industry use.
In terms of Serotiny’s team, the cofounders have significant experience in protein engineering and web development, with industry experts sitting on their board of advisors. They successfully secured funding from a phase I SBIR grant and a $3M seed round in 2018, and have made significant progress on developing their tool for beta testing.
